陈蓉是个登山爱好者。大三这年，放暑假后，她又准备去登山。同学田东从桂东南打来电话，邀她登两广交界的云开大山。
田东说，这座山不高，海拔才1274米，不过，华南的亚热带丛林遮天蔽日，诡谲百出，神秘莫测，很适合探险。云开大山更是堪称植物王国，动物天堂，探险胜地，山上有许多匪夷所思的超自然现象，素有中国百慕大之称……
陈蓉怦然心动：“既然你说得那么神秘，我倒要去看看是真是假。”田东大喜：“你一到，就给我打电话，我免费带路！”
两天后，陈蓉坐车来到云开大山脚下。抬头一看，山上云蒸霞蔚，果然不同凡响。登这样的山还用得着向导？再说深山老林、孤男寡女，也不方便。陈蓉想了想，决定先不通知田东，独自登山。
一路上，她看到许多奇花异草和五颜六色的飞禽走兽，还有不少浆果。她知道，南方丛林里许多植物都有致幻性，所以不去碰它们。可令她不解的是，经常看到长条形的土坑和腐朽的木板，在一些土崖边，还挖了猫耳洞，里面放着呆头呆脑的大瓮子。
傍晚，陈蓉来到主峰望君顶下，看到那儿也挖了不少猫耳洞。她见时候不早了，就决定就地宿营。帐篷搭好后，山上起风了，她怕风把帐篷吹跑，就到附近扛来几块腐朽的木板把帐篷四边压住。那些木板沾着泥土，都很沉。忙完这一切，她到溪边洗了手和脸，就坐到帐篷里吃东西。
她一边咀嚼一边琢磨猫耳洞里的那些瓮子是干啥的，可想破脑壳也猜不透。她欲起身去看个究竟，但这时天已黑透，只好等明天再说，就拉上帐篷门，躺下去休息。爬了一天山，又困又乏，一会儿就进入了梦乡。
半夜，她梦到许多骷髅在帐篷四周跳舞，一些骷髅还扣着朽木唱歌。一个骷髅嗤地拉开帐篷上的拉链门，把白生生的颅骨伸了进来……
“啊——”陈蓉尖叫一声，醒了。惊魂甫定的陈蓉把头伸出帐篷，看到一团鬼火正在森林里扭动。莫非这里是墓地，要不然哪来这么多磷火？这么一想，天不怕地不怕的她心里也有些发毛了。想给田东打电话，可黑灯瞎火的，田东也不可能找到这儿来，反而给他留下笑柄。
陈蓉没敢再睡。天一亮，她就钻出帐篷。仔细看看四周，既没墓碑，也没坟头，不像墓地。就是那些腐朽的木板也不像棺材板，因为上面有陈年的红漆——以她所知，棺材可都是黑色的。
陈蓉拨了田东的号码，田东问她啥时候出发？陈蓉笑道：“我昨天就已来到宝地。”田东不信，陈蓉说：“我都在山上住了一晚上，就在主峰下面，旁边有好几排猫耳洞，里面放着许多神秘的瓮子。”
田东相信了：“你独自在那过的夜？你真是麻大胆。我马上过来！”陈蓉问那些瓮子是干啥用的，里面装了什么东西？田东告诫她：“我待会儿再告诉你，你千万别去揭来看，千万！”
田东连说两
个“千万”，更是把陈蓉的好奇心激了起来。挂断电话，她就来到猫耳洞前。那些瓮子一米多高，顶上倒扣着一只碗状的盖子。
陈蓉选了一个比较向阳的猫耳洞，去揭瓮子上面的碗，凑过去看。还没容她看清楚，一只狰狞的骷髅突然从黑黢黢的瓮子里站起来，撞到了她的额头上！
陈蓉惊叫一声，手中的盖子落下，她脚下一软，跌下山坡，昏了过去！
等陈蓉醒来，已躺在舒适的床上。田东坐在床前，舒了口气：“你可醒了，快把我吓死了！”
陈蓉一把抓住田东的手，哭了起来。田东赶紧安慰她：“别怕，这是在我家里。”
陈蓉稍稍安定下来，心有余悸地问：“那些瓮子是干啥的，怎么里面有骷髅？”
田东告诉她，那些瓮子叫锦埕。当地有两次葬的风俗，人去世后，装到棺材里土葬几年，之后挖坟开棺，把骨殖夹到锦埕里，找块风水宝地再葬一次。风水宝地一时找不到，就在干燥的土崖边挖个猫耳洞暂时存放锦埕。
陈蓉目瞪口呆：“这么说，那些腐朽的木板就是从坟里挖出来的棺材板？”田东点点头。陈蓉又问怎么是红色的？田东告诉她，当地的棺材都漆成大红。陈蓉打了个冷战：“天，我就在棺木之间独自睡了一夜！还有一点我不明白，怎么瓮子里的骷髅会站起来？”田东说不可能，也许是你碰了什么植物，产生的幻觉。陈蓉摸摸额头说：“我亲自感到了疼痛！”
这话把田东逗笑了：“这样吧，你安心调养，等你恢复后，咱们一起到现场去看看。咱们受辩证唯物主义教育多年，哪相信什么神鬼！”陈蓉说：“可你不是说山上有许多超自然现象吗？”田东笑笑：“我不那样说，你会来吗？”
半个月后，陈蓉身体康复了，可还是噩梦不断，总梦见骷髅扑面撞向她的额头，人也消瘦了许多。
为了解开骷髅站立之谜，两人来到望君顶下。田东叫陈蓉站远些，他上前察看。他捡起地上那只盖子看了看，上面有个陈年的三角形缺口。他把敞着的锦埕扳过来，一个颅骨突然从瓮口伸出，随即又缩了回去。陈蓉在远处看得真切：“怎么样，没骗你吧！”
田东也吓了一跳，但他想了想，随即就笑了。他找了些干燥的柴草，捆成一小束，用打火机点燃，扔到锦埕里。不—会儿，—个骷髅伸出瓮口，爬出锦埕。陈蓉一看，颅骨后面，一条小臂粗的长长的黑蛇在扭动！
田东笑着解释说：“看到了吧？这是条南蛇，它一定是从盖子的缺口爬进锦埕蜗居，不慎把头钻到颅骨的孔窍里，拔不出，只好顶着颅骨活动。那天你揭开锦埕的盖子，惊动了里面的南蛇，它往外一蹿，颅骨正好撞到了你的额头上。”
陈蓉听了，感觉豁然开朗，从此再没做过那个噩梦。
