春节过后，靠山庄的王忠、刘田、张广三个年轻人结伴来广州打工，广州遍地黄金，淘金的人也多如蚁群，想找到一份工作也并非易事。一个多月过去了也没找到工作，从家里来时带的钱去了路费所剩无几，三个人愁眉苦脸地坐在街头上唉声叹气。
这天，三个人正无精打采地坐在街头发愁，一位衣着整齐的中年人来到他们的面前，很热情地对他们说：“三位是不是要找工作？”三个人点头说是，因为一时找不到用人单位正在着急呢。中年人说他是东莞市XX公司的工作人员，专程来广州招工的。说着打开皮夹从里面拿出工作证让三个人看，工作证上贴着中年人的照片，姓名栏上写着“郭云峰”三个字，职务栏里是“副处长”。中年人又把招工广告递给王忠、刘田、张广人每人一份。广告上的招工条件是：20岁以上30岁以下男性，初中以上文化，身体健康，无疾病。新招工人待遇月工资750元，三个月试用后增加到900——1200元，一年以后，根据工作情况可拿到1500元左右，年终视每个人工作情况分别给予1000至3000元奖金。中年人还说他们的公司效益很不错，产品在市场上信誉颇高，工人待遇绝对有保证。因为看王忠他们三个人像是从北方农村来的，北方人干活儿肯出力，他们愿意招北方人。如果他们愿意就到他们那里去干。王忠和刘田、张广一听介绍都非常高兴，三个人就异口同音地答应了。这位郭处长就把王忠等三人领到一家旅馆，说还要招十几个人，要他们在旅馆暂住几日，住宿费由公司负责，待人员招满后一起去东莞。
两天后，郭处长来到旅馆，说人员己招够了，马上乘车去东莞。王忠、刘田和张广跟随郭处长出了旅馆，一辆中巴车已候在门口，车内已有十几个年轻小伙子，看样子也像是北方人。
中巴车出了广州市不远，张广两感到两眼发涩，便想睡一觉。正在迷迷糊糊中，突然间瞧见老妈妈来到他面前，老妈妈伸手拽住张广的胳膊说：“广儿，你怎么到这个车上来了？快下车，跟娘回家！”老妈妈说着用力一拽将张广拉下了车！张广忽悠一下醒了，刚才原来是在做梦。张广揉揉惺忪的眼睛，睁开一看，发觉自己一个人躺在山坡上。张广一下子懵了，刚才明明是坐在去东莞的中巴车上，现在怎么到这儿了？这是什么地方？张广立刻慌神儿了，两个伙伴都坐车去了东莞，自己糊里糊涂地被弄到这山坡上来了，岂不是要误了大事！张广一个人孤零零地站在山坡上急得头上直冒汗，在这荒山野岭上连东西南北也辨不出来，这可怎么好？张广正自发愁，想找到人家询问，两眼东张西望看了一阵突然一愣：这地方怎么挺眼熟？再仔细看看，啊？山下的村庄好像是自己家乡的村子！张广心想：莫非自己还在做梦……可是，家乡的山山水水历历在目，村庄鸡犬之声声声入耳，一切都是那么清淅那么真切……
张广下山走进村庄，果然是自己的家乡！村里的伯伯、叔叔、大娘婶子，爷儿们娘儿们见了他都说他回来得正好，要是晚回来几天就看不着老妈妈了——老妈妈想儿子想得病倒在炕上已经好多天了，躺在炕上昏迷不醒，不住地喊“广儿，回家吧……”可是，谁知道张广在什么地方？打电话拍电报也没处去找啊……多亏好心的邻居照料又求医买药，不然就有危险了……张广从小丧父，是寡母苦熬苦拽把他拉扯大。听说老妈妈病了，张广流着眼泪急急忙忙地跑回家里，老妈妈抱住他就呜呜地哭了：“广儿，你可回来了！你去广州打工走后，妈时时刻刻都在惦记着你，儿行千里母担忧，人们都说外边小偷、骗子多，妈非常担心你在外边遭到什么灾难，妈想你都想出病来了，恨不得一把把你抓到手！没成想你真的回来了，是和王忠、刘田一起回来的吗？”
“娘，我，我做了一梦就到家了……”张广抱住老妈妈说，“王忠和刘田这会儿还不知道怎么着急找我呢……”
老妈妈说：“你说啥？做了一梦就到家了？”
张广说：“是真的，儿子怎么能跟妈妈说谎呢……”于是，张广便把梦中还乡的经过对老妈妈讲了。老妈妈听了又惊又喜，口中不住地说：“这可真神了……”
张广“一梦还乡”的奇事便很快在村里传开了。乡亲们听了都说张广在胡编骗人，天底下哪有这样的奇事？
过了一个多月后，王忠和刘田也回来了。两个人苦丧着脸蔫耷耷地进了自家门，见了亲人便一把鼻涕一把眼泪地痛哭起来……经过父母再三盘问，两个人才哭哭啼啼地道出了实情。
原来王忠、刘田、张广和另外十来个北方打工仔在广州上了中巴车，那个郭处长说带他们去东莞的公司上班。他们十几个人被中巴车拉到一个地方，下了车后却不见了张广，王忠问刘田说：“张广呢？”刘田说：“张广不是和你挨着坐吗？我哪里知道……”问郭处长和车上的那十个人，都说不知道。这可怪了，在广州明明是一起上车的，张广上车后又和王忠挨坐在一起，中途也没停车，车门关得紧紧的，也没有开过一次，怎么一个大活人就给“丢”了？王忠和刘田立刻着了慌，张广要是出了事咋办？一起来的伙伴不明不白地没了，回家后怎么向张广的老妈妈交待？两个人便决定放弃已找到的工作，准备沿路回返寻找张广。郭处长劝王忠和刘田说不用着急，不会出什么问题。郭处长说这事由他去办，到东莞后先把他们十几个人的工作安排一下，然后马上在东莞和广州两处的电视台、报社做几份“寻人启事”，肯定会找到张广的，这样，工作“寻人”两不误岂不是更好。王忠和刘田听郭处长一说也觉得有道理，他们两个人去找张广简直就如同大海捞针一般，况且身上又没有钱了，于是就同意了。
