果然，朱子奇是知道这种怪病的，他的爷爷朱富贵曾亲眼见过。
朱富贵小的的时候，家乡发生了一场大旱灾，许多人家都断了口粮。立秋的那天，朱富贵和村里的几个伙伴一起去山里挖野菜，走了很久依然没有收获。
就在大家准备返回的时候，一个叫狗蛋的孩子在一堆乱石之中发现了五只碗口大的蘑菇，不过这些蘑菇的形状十分怪异，菌盖上面有着人形的花纹。一群人一拥而上，最终身强力壮的莫老五抢了两个。其他人就怂恿莫老五吃一个尝尝鲜。
奠老五经不起大家的怂恿，挑了一只较小的蘑菇大嚼起来咽了下去。然后，他就直挺挺地躺在了地上，口鼻往外流白沫，更奇怪的还在后面‘他的头竟然瘪了下去，然后四肢跟着也瘪了下去，肚子却急剧膨胀起来。终于，“啪”的一声！莫老五的肚子胀裂了，蹦出一个缩小了的莫老五，并且迅速生长到了原本莫老五的大小。
看到这里，朱富贵和其他几个伙伴早就吓得呆在那里动弹不得了。最终，还是朱富贵胆大一些，他颤巍巍地问道：“老五，你……你……没事吧！”
“没事啊！好得很！”莫老五答。
莫老五都这么说了，大家也不敢再问。后来，他们怕这个新莫老五会报复自己，所以没向任何人提及这件事。当然，剩下的那四只蘑菇早就被他们扔掉了。
时间过去两年，莫老五却忽然发生了新的变化：有一天早上六点钟的时候，他的身体忽然急剧地收缩起来，一直收缩到一只蚂蚁的大小，然后又逐渐恢复了原状。七天之后，莫老五的身体开始出现浮肿，头发和牙齿也开始逐渐脱落……又过了七天，莫老五的身体终于撑不住了，他死的时候，老得就像一百岁！
朱子奇把这个故事讲给了诺布听，诺布说没错，自己的症状和莫老五一模一样，所不同的是，他在五年前才出现这种症状。当然，五年之前他也吃了一次蘑菇。
根据诺布的病情来看，他大概还可以撑七天左右。朱子奇花了很长时间去浏览各种菌类的资料，并托很多朋友一起去找这种毒蘑菇的来历。最终，一个研究生物学的朋友告诉朱子奇，这种毒蘑菇名叫“摇篮菇”。通常的“摇篮菇”是没毒的，但有人形花纹的“摇篮菇”就是一种能使人新陈代谢紊乱的剧毒蘑菇！
这种人形花纹是由婴儿的死尸形成的。一旦“摇篮菇”获得了婴儿的死尸作为养分，它的菌盖上就会形成人形花纹。但是人形花纹形成之后，“摇篮菇”的生命也就到了尽头，三个小时之内就会枯萎死掉。
如果有人不幸食用这种“摇篮菇”，那么食用的人就会成为“摇篮菇”的寄生体，“寄生人’发病的时间则是由婴儿死亡时的年龄决定的，而解救”寄生人“唯一的办法，就是再吃另外一只带有人形花纹的”摇篮菇“，重新来一次轮回。

原来，如今家财万惯的诺布曾经不过是个穷小子，早些年和妻子靠做些小生意过活。后来诺布把生意做大了。花花肠子便多起来，很快勾搭上了一个妙龄女子。
有了外遇之后，诺布对妻子就冷淡了。有一次诺布和小三正在打情骂俏，妻子忽然打电话让他回去，但是诺布随便编了个借口就把电话挂了。第二天回到家，才知道自己五岁的女儿出了车祸。
诺布怪妻子没有看好女儿，对她更加冷淡了。半年后，诺布的妻子终于忍受不住，提出了离婚，条件是诺布要和她吃最后一顿晚餐，晚餐只有一道烧蘑菇。为了顺利和妻子离婚，诺布勉强吃了几口。
离婚手续三天就办好了。诺布离开的那天，他的妻子自杀了，就在她女儿的坟前。当诺布慌慌张张地赶过去的时候，只见到女儿的坟上长了几只带有人形花纹的蘑菇，而妻子的尸体早已
经不见了。
诺布把他的故事讲完之后，干瘪的脸上竟然浮现出了一丝红光。所谓因果轮回，诺布做了他女儿的寄生体也算是报应。七天之后，诺布的遗体在他女儿坟墓的旁边下葬了，他老得就像一百岁一样。
