莉极为小气，从来都是占别人便宜，不肯吃一点儿亏。大家给她取了个外号名叫“铁母鸡”。

后来，人们都不愿意和朱莉交往，朱莉自己也很苦恼。有一天夜里，朱莉睡不着去操场散步，一个鬼魂从她身后飘了过来。

鬼在朱莉耳边说：“你应该明白舍与得是相互的，要想得到就要先学会舍弃。假如你装作可怜，大家就会同情你，这样你就能得到别人的东西了。”

朱莉觉得鬼说得有道理。

第二天，她跟同学说：“对不起，以前是我太小气了，我不该这样子。都是因为我父母生病了，家里没有收入，还欠了一笔外债……”朱莉一边说，一边哭泣。

这一招果然管用，朱莉不仅得到了原谅，还收到了同学们的捐款，这可把她乐坏了。这天夜里，朱莉去操场找鬼，并把这个好消息告诉它。

鬼摇了摇头说：“这样你就满足了，你想不想得到更多？”

朱莉连忙说：“想！我太想了！”

鬼说：“你要继续装可怜，明天去外面假装找一份工作，我会暗中帮你。”

第二天，朱莉去外面的小饭店打零工。她的心思根本没有放在工作上，做事情也马马虎虎，结果朱莉不小心跌倒，脑袋砸在桌子角上，当场就死掉了。

同学们都很伤心，甚至有些人感到愧疚。他们觉得朱莉是为了学业、为了家庭而努力工作，才会导致过度劳累而摔死。
